CYNESA in Homa Bay Diocese

The CYNESA team in Kenya was in the Catholic Diocese of Homa Bay from July 28-31 2018, with a mission to meet young people and share the messages of Laudato Si and care for creation. The team members visiting Homa Bay were David Munene, Hellen Mugo and Celestine Otieno.

On Saturday July 28, 2018 the team visited the Emmaus Catholic Church, Rongo Parish where it found the youth working in their shamba close to the church. The youth group engages in crop farming and is currently growing maize and vegetables. The CYNESA team joined the youth in harvesting maize at the shamba. They lauded the youth for the farming project which is not only an income generating and team building project but also a practical way of living Laudato Si. The youth also have a little forest at the church, aptly named ‘Laudato Si’. Fr. Felix Ochieng, the parish priest and his colleague Fr. Raymond Oloo were very welcoming to CYNESA and encouraged the team to establish sustainable engagement with the youth.

CYNESA will continue to engage the Rongo youth especially through art like drama and music which the youth group is passionate about, being one of the best Catholic youth groups in drama in Kenya. Celestine, as a young person from Homa Bay diocese encouraged the youth to take action in addressing environmental challenges in their region and to take advantage of any opportunities that come their way, including training on environmental matters.

The CYNESA team also visited Rakwaro Parish to meet Father James and Father Richard and discuss possible engagement with the youth at their parish. Fr. Richard invited CYNESA to engage the youth during a deanery youth seminar to be held from August 23 to August 29, 2018 at Rakwaro.
