CYNESA Participates in FLEAT-Tanzania

In August, CYNESA members comprising of the Executive Director Allen Ottaro and Core Team Member Kelly Ngeti, joined faith leaders from other parts of Africa in Same-Tanzania.

FLEAT Tanzania - 2016This was part of meetings and forums under the FLEAT program run by SAFCEI. On this three full packed days, the team which comprised of faith leaders from Zambia, Malawi, South Africa and Kenya met with over 50 faith  leaders in Tanzania to evaluate, discuss and plan how faith leaders in the Africa Region could take a more leading role on issues of climate justice; conserving and protecting the environment.

The 50 leaders included priests and Bishops from different church organisations including Presbyterian, Catholic, Lutheran and others. Muslims were also present. The leaders first got a chance to see the current Tanzania’s environmental challenges through a video presentation. Allen Ottaro also took the participants through the Encyclical on care for creation “Laudato Si’. He first took time to lay down a brief history of encyclical, when and why it it written at the same time explaining in detail its meaning to us and especially to the youth. He brought to the attention of all the Pope’s call to all humanity in caring for our common home ;the earth quoting several paragraphs of the encyclical.

FLEAT Tanzania - 2016Kelly Ngeti on the other hand spoke about sustainable leadership bringing to the attention of all, the importance of inclusive leadership in all angles as faith leaders prepare to tackle the issue of Eco-injustices, highlighting the key role leadership plays in bringing any plans and discussions to action.

Several other presenters too took to stage other vital knowledge including the effects of in organic fertilizers on the soil, to waters and to health which was done by Rev.Jacob Manda of Zambia.

Felicidade Chirinda of Zimbabwe took the participants through basics tips of saving water and electricity domestically.

CYNESA has representatives in the FLEAT program which aims at using faith leaders in Africa to advocate for climate justice and help alleviate climate change effects.
